As Kriegesgefanenen (prisoner of war) number 5887 at Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany. This photo was taken shortly after capture of 2nd Lt. Bengis after his plane was shot down on September 11, 1944

 

Another view of "Kreigie" Bengis. The number of prisoners at Stalag Luft I swelled from 3,463 in April 1944 to 6000 in September 1944. At the time of the camp's liberation there were 9144 prisoners (American and British).
